Dual enrollment offers advantages for Dalton students

High school can be a big thing to handle sometimes. With tests, projects, extracurricular activities and more, it’s a hectic time.

But for 32 Dalton Public Schools students, they wanted more. So they all decided to dual enroll at nearby colleges — most students were enrolled at their high school and then either at Dalton State College or Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC).

Nineteen-year-old recent Morris Innovative High School (MIHS) graduate Jonathan Griggs attended both MIHS and GNTC.

“I wanted to get ahead in college, and it was free,” said Griggs. “I couldn’t resist that.”

Griggs spent his mornings at MIHS, and then he would attend GNTC in the afternoons.

He took two classes at the college — a World History class and Intro to Computers.

“It was a different environment,” Griggs said of the college campus. “There was much more freedom.”

For Griggs, the most challenging part of dual enrollment was getting to the campus since he does not have a driver’s license. He said his father would come pick him up and drive him to where he needed to go.

“I love my parents,” he said. “They’ve helped me so much. Especially my sweet mother, Carol Griggs.”

Griggs said of dual enrollment: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I highly recommend it. It gives you a way to get ahead and get college credit.”

Griggs plans to finish his time at GNTC and then attend Dalton State for the rest of his college career.

Seventeen-year-old Ashley Yarbrough wasn’t even at her home school of Dalton High School at all — she spent her time on the Dalton State campus.

Throughout the 2013-14 school year, Yarbrough took eight classes at DSC, four per semester.

“I wanted to get ahead and get college experience,” the recent high school graduate said. “It helped both school wise and money wise.

By the time Yarbrough attends Auburn University in the fall, she will technically be a sophomore due to her hours already taken.

By taking the eight classes at DSC, Yarbrough has already gotten her core classes out of the way and can head right into her major classes. She carried a 4.0 grade point average while at DSC.

Yarbrough had 8 a.m. classes every day, but there were some days she was finished by 12:15 p.m.

“I was treated like a regular college student,” Yarbrough said of her time at DSC.

“It was challenging, but easier than I expected,” said Yarbrough of dual enrollment. “I would recommend for anyone to do it.”
