Dalton council tables zoning proposal

The Dalton City Council on Monday tabled a recommendation from the Dalton-Whitfield Planning Commission to rezone .22 acres at the northeast corner of Felice Street and Arbella Street to restricted commercial from high-density residential.

Developers plan to expand parking for a nearby office building. City Administrator Ty Ross said council member Denise Wood wanted some additional information on the proposal before voting.

Council members voted 3-0 to approve an amendment to the 2014 budget that, among other things, will take $75,000 from the hotel/motel tax fund for improvements on the Crescent City train car. The council approved the spending in December to match $75,000 raised by a private group to renovate the historic car, which is next to the old freight depot off Morris Street.

Mayor Pro Tem George Sadosuk generally votes only in the event of a tie.

Council members also heard the first reading of an ordinance that clarifies the role of council members who serve as liaisons to various commissions and committees appointed by the council.
