One charged in death of Dalton woman, another sought

A Dalton woman found dead in Calhoun earlier this month is believed to have died of a drug overdose after two Calhoun residents abandoned her in a car behind the VFW on East Line Street, Lt. Tony Pyle with the Calhoun Police Department said Wednesday afternoon.

David Bastin has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. Francis Leming is sought for the same charges.

“We do not have the official cause of death from the crime lab yet,” Pyle said. “Drugs are suspected. If it comes back anything other than a drug overdose it will be very surprising.”

Haley Stanley, 24, was found dead in her car just after 10 a.m. on June 11.

It is believed Stanley “began to overdose at another location, at these people’s house, and they didn’t want her dying at the house so they drove her to this location,” Pyle said. “We believe she was still alive at the time and they left her.”

Pyle said the area where Stanley was left wasn’t in plain sight.

“It appears the suspects drove the victim to the location where she was discovered and left her without any regard for her safety or well-being,” Pyle said in a news release. “Based on information we received during our investigation we do not believe the suspects directly caused the death of Miss Stanley, however we do believe the victim was still alive and in obvious distress when she was abandoned by the suspects.”

Bastin remains in the Gordon County Jail. Pyle said he believes Leming fled the area.

Anyone with information on Leming’s location is asked to contact the Calhoun Police Department at (706) 629-1234.
