Sunday alcohol sales start this weekend in Dalton

DALTON — Sunday will be the first that Dalton convenience stores, supermarkets and liquor stores will be able to sell alcoholic beverages.

The Dalton City Council voted 4-0 Monday to allow retail sales of alcohol. The Cohutta Town Council voted last week to approve retail sales of alcohol on Sunday in that city. Sunday sales began on Nov. 27 in Cohutta.

Voters in each city approved referendums approving Sunday sales in the Nov. 8 election. Voters rejected Sunday sales of alcohol in Varnell, Tunnel Hill and unincorporated Whitfield County. Because Dalton already permitted the retail sale of beer, wine and distilled spirits, its Sunday sales referendum includes all classes of alcoholic beverages. But Cohutta permitted only the sale of beer and wine, so its Sunday sales referendum only included those beverages.

Georgia law had previously banned retail sales of alcoholic beverages on Sunday across the state. But earlier this year, the General Assembly passed a law allowing cities and counties to hold local referendums permitting Sunday sales.
