From Staff Reports
A 1,250-acre controlled burn in Walker County left portions of Whitfield and Murray counties under heavy smoke on Sunday.
Officials with the Whitfield County 911 said they have been told the burn may last a few more days.
The burn is being conducted in the Keown Falls area in the U.S. Forest Service’s Conasauga Ranger District. It includes John’s Mountain Overlook, Keown Flats Picnic Area and Trailhead and a portion of the Pinhoti Trail.
The burn is expected to help reduce the chances of wildfires and to improve wildlife habitat, according to the Forest Service’s website, www.fs.usda.gov.
