Court roundup

Several charged are scheduled for hearings

A Dalton man accused of raping a woman last March is scheduled to be back in court Feb. 17.

Zachary Alan Henry was 27 when he was charged in December. The alleged victim told Dalton police she met Henry online in February 2013 and that she was raped and held captive for several hours at a hotel.

Henry is scheduled to appear in Whitfield County Superior Court before Judge David Blevins.

There are several other cases scheduled to come before the court in the next few weeks. Among them:

• Ronald Len Merrill of Dalton is scheduled to appear before Judge Jack Partain on March 7 for a calendar call to state whether he is ready for trial. Merrill faces two counts of aggravated assault (family violence), false imprisonment, battery (family violence, first offense), three counts of obstruction and two counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer for allegedly threatening and choking a woman and pulling a steak knife on a sheriff’s deputy.

• William “Billy” Roger Newcom, who taught gymnastics at the Creative Arts Guild more than two years ago, is scheduled for a March 6 calendar call before Judge William T. Boyett to state whether he is ready for a March 10 trial date. He is charged with child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes and distributing obscene materials to minors for allegedly sending inappropriate text messages and photos to a 15-year-old former student.
