Another day without school

As snow threatens to return, school officials err ‘on the side of caution’

Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools and Murray County Schools are closed today, school officials said, due to a potentially dangerous winter storm.

Officials with each school system said their decisions on whether class will be canceled for Wednesday will be announced today.

Dalton State College officials said they're going to monitor the weather situation today and will make a decision on if class will be cancelled by 6 a.m.

“We are waiting to see how all this plays out,” Pat Holloway, communications director for Dalton schools, said. “We are erring on the side of caution.”

Dalton students have now missed three full days of class this year, counting today, after closings during last month’s icy weather that impacted much of the state. Students in the Whitfield and Murray school systems have now missed four days so far this year.

By 7 tonight, forecasters expect about an inch, and possibly one to two inches, of snow to have fallen in Whitfield County. In Murray County, one to three inches is much more likely, especially in the mountains, said Alex Gibbs, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.
