Officials still urging drivers to stay off roads

Some area roads closed

Dug Gap Battle Road is closed in Whitfield County due to weather conditions. In Murray County, Ga. Highway 52 is closed.

Officials in both counties said that while there have been a few wrecks this morning, they have been minor since most people are heeding advice to stay off the roads as much as possible.

Whitfield County Emergency Management Director Claude Craig said 16 members from the National Guard’s Charlie Co. out of Dalton were called to assist the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with welfare checks during the winter storm.

“We’re kind of experiencing a little lull in the precipitation,” Craig said shortly before 11 a.m. “I look for it to ramp back up (later today).”

The Murray County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement at 10 a.m. saying roads were getting worse there and officials are “expecting a total and complete refreeze this afternoon into the night.”

Sheriff’s officials urged everyone to stay off the roads and not go near power lines if any go down.
