Editor's note: According to District Attorney Bert Poston, Stevie Lee Walkey received a sentence of 20 years with the first eight years in prison.

A Dalton man who faced charges related to firing a handgun at his wife and stepson pleaded guilty on Friday and is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Stevie Lee Walkey was 45 and living at 2109 Millican Lane when he was charged in February by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of aggravated assault. A grand jury later indicted him on the upgraded charge of criminal attempt to commit murder.

Walkey’s attorney, Sam Sanders, said that charge was inappropriate and there was more to the case. On Friday, Walkey pleaded guilty to the original charges — two counts of aggravated assault — before Judge David Blevins in Superior Court in exchange for the attempted murder charge being dropped.

Walkey is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 19. He faces up to 20 years on each count.

• In another case, a Whitfield County jury found Onofre Rodriguez guilty of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person. Rodriguez was 29 and living at 1029 Ben Hill Road in Dalton when the Dalton Police Department charged him in April after a woman said he had unprotected sex with her before telling her about his condition.

Rodriguez is scheduled for sentencing in Superior Court before Judge William T. Boyett on Oct. 29. Rodriguez is listed on the Georgia Sex Offender Registry as being convicted of statutory rape in 2001.
