A Dalton woman who authorities said kidnapped her son from his father’s home near a military base in South Georgia, then drove several hundred miles on her way back to Dalton, is in the Whitfield County jail awaiting extradition. The boy was unharmed.
Miranda Leanne Hamby, 19, of 209 Beechland Court, was charged Sunday by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office with kidnapping, interference with custody and burglary after officials say she took her 1-year-old son, Rylan, from his home in Camden County near the Florida line.
William Terrell, a spokesman for the Camden sheriff’s office, said investigators tracked the woman through her cellphone and “human intelligence” as she traveled to South Carolina and then back to Dalton. FBI agents and the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
According to a post on the Camden sheriff office’s Facebook page, Hamby had lost custody of her son earlier “due to her drug use and violent behavior.” Officials said she went to the boy’s home sometime Saturday morning and, they believe, left with him while the residents slept. Authorities located her in Dalton on Sunday.
Asked if the child was believed to be in danger, Terrell said, “We couldn’t rule that out.”
Lt. Nancy Chadwick with the Whitfield sheriff’s office said an officer there executed the warrant for Camden County.
