Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools and Head Start held their pre-kindergarten registration this week and had a successful response. The community registration coincided with the community’s declaration of this week as the “Week of the Young Child.”
More than 750 children who will be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2013, applied for the classes that begin in August. Students will be placed in a lottery to fill the available spaces in the program and notified by mid-May. The program provides trained pre-k teachers and staff who work to help students build a foundation for learning both socially and academically to ensure success in elementary school.
Georgia’s pre-k program began in 1992 under Gov. Zell Miller’s leadership to serve at-risk 4-year-old children and their families. At the time, Georgia’s program served 750 children at 20 sites across the state. During the 2011-2012 school year, more than 82,000 children were served in every county in the state.
Mayor David Pennington proclaimed April 14-20 The Week of the Young Child in Dalton. The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
A program will be held Sunday at Rock Bridge Community Church at 2 p.m. to commemorate the week. The ceremony features Commissioner Bobby Cagle, with Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, as well as local officials and school superintendents who will be recognizing our community’s youngest residents and the teachers and staff who work with them each day. The program, which is open to the public, includes remarks by Pennington, Whitfield County Board of Commissioners Chairman Mike Babb and Matt Evans, senior pastor of Rock Bridge Community Church, followed by the recognition of early childhood educators with the presentation of certificates.
Students from Whitfield County and Dalton city schools will provide entertainment with a special choral performance.
