— The driver of an SUV that collided with a motorcycle, sending its rider to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga by Life Force helicopter, has been cited for failure to yield.

The motorcyclist is expected to recover, but details on his condition were not immediately available.

According to an accident report, Peter Joseph Scarborough of Dalton was pulling straight across Thornton Avenue from the west side of Franklin Street on Tuesday at about 5:15 p.m. when his GMC Yukon hit a Harley motorcycle that Kenneth L. Whaley of LaFayette was driving.

Whaley was on the inside lane of Thornton Avenue traveling north. Their vehicles skidded several feet before coming to rest on the east side of Franklin Street. According to the report, Scarborough said he entered the southbound lanes of Thornton Avenue while waiting for a vehicle to pass in the northbound lane, but he didn’t see the motorcycle until he hit it. Phone numbers for Scarborough and Whaley could not be found.

The report states Whaley told police he saw the Yukon coming toward him and tried unsuccessfully to speed up to get out of the way.
