Fire destroys warehouse

An early morning fire on Wednesday destroyed a warehouse at 2320 South Dixie Highway belonging to the Signs Graphics Printing company, authorities said.

Jamie Kennedy of Signs Graphics Printing said the building is a total loss.

“It’s a warehouse where we stored raw materials and finished goods,” he said from the company’s headquarters just off the South Bypass. “No manufacturing is done there. No one lost jobs and there is no stop in production.”

A cause for the fire had not been determined as of Wednesday afternoon.

Whitfield County Fire Department units from Carbondale, East Side and Valley Point responded, said Assistant Chief Randy Kittle. The call came into Whitfield 911 just after 3 a.m., an operator said.

“They have two different insurance companies, one for the building and one for the contents,” Kittle said. “The steel from the roof will have to be removed first. They (insurance companies) will have to work together.”

He added a “conservative estimate” of loss for the 15,000-square-foot building would be around $1 million.
