Dalton residents could be hiking and biking new trails on Mount Rachel next spring.
Dalton City Council members voted 4-0 on Monday to award a $238,300 contract to Cope Brothers Construction of Dalton for walking and biking trails and trailheads on Mount Rachel. The city’s share of that will be $20,000. The rest comes from state and federal grants.
City Administrator Ty Ross said the city is waiting for final approval from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to start the work.
“I expect that will come within the next few weeks, perhaps even within the next couple of days,” he said.
Ross said the project is expected to take four months to complete after work starts.
The trails are part of the City Council’s larger efforts to make Dalton more friendly to those who walk and bike as well as to revitalize the historic Crown Mill village area.
Council members also voted 4-0 to:
• Accept a quit-claim deed from Shaw Industries for a small amount of property on Mount Rachel. Ross says the property is needed to complete the trails. The city agrees to fence that property off from Shaw’s remaining property in the area. Funding for the fence is included in the Mount Rachel project.
• Award an $18,780 contract to Cope Brothers Construction for patio and door awning repairs at Fire Station 1.
• Renew for $3,000 a contract with Minnesota-based GeoComm to maintain the city’s geographic information system.
• Approve a $5,500 contract with Buford-based Kadima to remove and dispose of asbestos at two condemned houses at 204 Grade Drive and 403 E. Hawthorne St.
• Renew an agreement with Rochester, N.Y.-based CGI Communications for a community video tour. The city pays no money for the tour but agrees to show the video on its website and to help provide content.
• Approve an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for new lighting at the I-75 interchange at Rocky Face. GDOT will install the lighting, and the city will pay for the electricity.
• Re-appoint Omar Cruz as a resident member of the Dalton Housing Authority.
• Re-appoint Kenneth Harless, Austin King and Tate O’Gwin to the Dalton-Whitfield Board of Zoning Appeals.
• Approve the outline of an agreement with the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia for the city to sell property near Veterans Drive and Hale Bowen Drive at a “nominal” fee for the construction of a new animal shelter. In return, the agreement calls for the Humane Society to assist the city with animal control. City Attorney Jim Bisson said he would have a formal agreement for the council members to vote on at their next meeting.
