One million

Local man wins big

Submitted by the Georgia Lottery

— The holidays are already in full swing for a local man after he won a $1 million prize from the Georgia Lottery.

Charles Shaw, a door frame inspector for a local car manufacturer, won the prize playing “50X The Money” at the Kanku’s Express on Cleveland Highway.

“I went in and got a Coke and a ticket,” Shaw, 52, said. “I scratched it in the truck.”

Shaw says he has no immediate plans with the winnings, which will be paid out in 20 annual payments of $50,000.

“I’m pretty calm,” he said. “I don’t think it has sunk in yet.”

Since its start in 1992, the Georgia Lottery has returned more than $13.8 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program.

More than 1.4 million students have received HOPE and more than 1.2 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary pre-kindergarten program.
