Shelter to be opened for those in need

Those in need of shelter from the cold can come to the North Georgia Fairgrounds starting tonight.

Whitfield County emergency management officials and Harvest Outreach plan to open a warming shelter in the fairground’s multipurpose building.

“This is for anyone who doesn’t have heat, whether they are homeless or don’t have power or are out of heating fuel or any reason,” said Claude Craig, Whitfield County emergency management director. “This is a collaborative effort between us and Harvest Outreach. The American Red Cross will also be helping out, and we have other volunteers helping us.”

Craig said Monday they planned to have the shelter open by 7 p.m. Monday and it would likely remain open until temperatures begin to rise again Wednesday afternoon.
