Snow in the forecast

The National Weather Service says there is a slight chance of some snow tonight for Dalton, and a chance of snow also Saturday night. The chance of precipitation is 20 percent tonight and 30 percent Saturday night.

Today’s forecast for Dalton calls for a 20 percent chance of rain after 3 p.m., with mostly sunny conditions and a high near 60. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.

Tonight, the National Weather Service is calling for a slight chance of rain, mixing with snow after 9 p.m., then gradually ending. The low is expected to be around 30.

On Saturday, the forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of rain after 4 p.m. with partly sunny conditions and a high near 41. A Northwest wind is expected from 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Saturday night, there is a chance of rain and snow before 7 p.m., then a chance of snow between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., with the low around 23.

Sunday during the day is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 45, with Sunday night partly cloudy with a low around 30.

Sherman’s strategy was to target two of his armies, about 80,000 men, against Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston’s Army of Tennessee at Dalton. Then, while Johnston’s attention was diverted by these forces, he would secretly send his third army, about 25,000 troops under Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson, in a flanking movement to the southwest through Snake Creek Gap. Sherman’s goal was to break Johnston’s railroad supply line some 15 miles south at Resaca and trap Johnston’s Confederates in Dalton.
