Hamfest here Saturday

Around 1,000 amateur radio enthusiasts are expected to take part in a convention Saturday at the North Georgia Fairgrounds.

“It’s the Dalton Hamfest, and amateur radio operators will be coming from all over the United States. A lot of them will be coming in for the weekend, and that will generate some money for the community,” said David Stanley, a member of the Dalton Amateur Radio Club, which is sponsoring the event.

“Ham” radio operators and vendors will be buying, selling, trading and displaying amateur radio equipment and other electronics. Stanley said many of the dealers will have some of the newest radio equipment available on hand.

“Anybody is welcome to come, especially if they have an interest in radio or electronics,” said Stanley. “We are there for people who are interested in amateur radio and want to get involved. We will answer any questions they might have.”

Stanley said recent severe weather may have gotten some people interested in amateur radio.

“It’s a hobby, and all of us really enjoy it. But we also provide a community service during severe weather and other emergencies. When phones and cellphones don’t work, we can still communicate with the rest of the world,” he said.

The Dalton Hamfest takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the North Georgia Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 at the gate. For more information, go to daltonhamfest.com.
