Canales indicted for murder

A Whitfield County grand jury on Thursday indicted a Dalton man accused of shooting his father, mother and brother in April 2012 on 19 counts, including for murder and attempted murder.

Emilio Christopher Canales, 28, was living at 1011 Dude St., off North Hamilton Street, when he was charged last year by the Dalton Police Department in the deaths of his father, Emilio Canales Sr., 50, and brother, Emilio Francisco Canales, 31, and with shooting and injuring his mother, Deborah J. Canales. Authorities said at the time there was a domestic dispute that led to the violence.

A grand jury indicted Canales on six counts of murder, attempted murder, five counts of aggravated assault, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, three counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and for being a habitual felon. District Attorney Bert Poston said the multiple counts are because of nuances in the law.

Public Defender Mike McCarthy, who is representing Canales, didn’t immediately return a phone call on Thursday.

Canales is scheduled for arraignment May 29 before Judge William T. Boyett.
