$10 rabies clinics Saturday

Submitted by Whitfield County Animal Shelter

— The Whitfield County reduced rabies vaccination clinic is Saturday with fees of $10 per cat or dog vaccinated. Distemper, parvo and other vaccines are available. Prices vary for these vaccines.

Dogs must be leashed and cats must be in a pet carrier

“We have been doing this reduced rabies vaccination clinic since the ‘70s to help the public protect themselves and their pets against rabies,” veterinarian Chris Stearns said. “We have kept the low price of $10 per cat or dog vaccinated to encourage everyone to have their pets vaccinated. The rabies shots at the clinics are valid throughout the United States, so pet owners in Northwest Georgia and Tennessee are welcome to bring their animals if they wish.”

Rabies is transmitted by raccoons, skunks, foxes, wolves and coyotes and the No. 1 rabies carrier is bats. Pets, cats and dogs are the barrier between humans and these animals. Should an infected animal bite a cat or dog that has not been vaccinated, it could contract the disease and then could spread it to other animals, and a more serious threat, to humans.

While rabies is rare in the United States because of strict vaccination laws, worldwide there are about 55,000 cases annually, with a death rate of almost 100 percent.

The clinic will be at the following locations:

• Dug Gap Elementary School from noon to 1 p.m.
