Restaurant report card — Whitfield County


— Whitfield County Environmental Health conducts inspections of restaurants. The inspectors may require a re-inspection. Restaurants are required by law to post their most recent inspection permit.

The Daily Citizen lists areas where the establishments are out of compliance with the regulations. Recent restaurant scores for all six counties within the North Georgia Health District are available at www.nghd.org.

Comments: Observed food handler without a hair restraint. All food handlers are required to wear adequate hair restraints to keep hair out of food. Wiping cloths sitting on counter. Store cloths in sanitizer when not in hand. Cups on floor. Store all single-service items 6 inches up off the floor to protect from contamination. Several torn cooler gaskets. Replace torn gaskets.

Comments: Numerous bent cans were observed. These were set aside to return. Segregate bent/damaged cans from those not damaged. Three bins containing agriculture products were observed without labels. Label all food ingredients once they have been removed from original container. Washed apples were observed on lunch line without any protection from children’s hands. Wrap apples or place them in sandwich bags to avoid contamination from children who pick up fruit before picking which one they want.



Piccola Pizzeria, 816 Walnut Square Blvd., Unit 58

Comments: Food stored under leaking lines in freezer. Do not store food under possible sources of contamination. Employees not wearing hair restraints but wearing nail polish and rings with settings. All employees must wear proper hair restraints. Nail polish is not permitted; only plain wedding bands are permitted. Invert all single-service items. Clean mixer. Repair leak at toilet.

Comments: Bucket of chlorine sanitizer had almost undetectable amount of sanitizer. The sanitizer was made new. Keep sanitizer level at 100 ppm for chlorine in cloth buckets. Multiple flies were observed in storage room. Maintain drive-thru windows closed at all times when not actually exchanging food/money with customers. Have a method to safely and effectively remove flies from food and utensils. Keep time on potentially hazardous foods on prep line. Four hours to use item out of temperature.



Papa John’s Pizza, 100 Walnut Ave., Suite 2

Dalton Elks Lodge, Vista Restaurant, 1212 Elkwood Drive

Comments: Several foods in reach-in were not date-marked. Several foods were out of date. Date all potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat foods. Discard out-of-date items. Cold handle leaking at four-compartment sink. Repair leak. Several lights are missing end caps. All lights must have end caps/shields.



Loncheria Los Compadres, 420 Fields Ave.

Comments: Employees were observed washing hands with water (clean to sight) in bucket and without soap. Hands must be washed in hand sink with warm water and soap. Hands were re-washed. Employee was observed handling tortillas on the grill with bare hands. Bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods is not allowed. Flip tortillas with utensil to avoid melting glove off hand. Beans made day before were found out of temperature in cooler. Beans were in small, deep container. All other items in that cooler met temperature. Foods must cool properly. Educational material providing details was provided. Door and window were observed open. A fly and mosquito were found inside the unit. Openings were closed.



Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant, 1235 Glenwood Ave.

Comments: Observed employee touch pepper/onion/cooked chicken with bare hands. Bare hand contact is not permitted. Employee drink in regular bottles stored above food in reach-in cooler. Employee drinks must be in single-service cup with lid and straw. Put on bottom of cooler. Sour cream at 56 degrees, sliced tomato at 57.5 degrees. Hold all potentially hazardous food at 41 degrees or lower. Observed a lot of undated foods. Put prep/use-by date on all ready-to-eat/potentially hazardous foods. For proper cooling, do not cover or stack pans. Use ice baths and leave uncovered. Employees without proper hair restraints. All food handlers are required to wear hair restraints. Wiping cloths on counters. Submerge cloths in sanitizer with not in hand. Store scoop handles up out of food. Do not use grocery bags for food storage.



Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant, 1235 Glenwood Ave.

Comments: Sanitizer buckets did not register chlorine when tested. Use 100 ppm chlorine for sanitizer buckets. Previous inspection was not posted. The most recent inspection must be posted at all times for public display. Two torn gaskets were observed. One on freezer at entrance of kitchen and another in reach-in freezer. A cup was observed in beans at steam tables. It was to be used as a scoop. Back door of kitchen was open during the inspection.
