Restaurant report card — Whitfield County


— Whitfield County Environmental Health conducts inspections of restaurants. The inspectors may require a re-inspection. Restaurants are required by law to post their most recent inspection permit.

The Daily Citizen lists areas where the establishments are out of compliance with the regulations. Recent restaurant scores for all six counties within the North Georgia Health District are available at www.nghd.org.



Marco’s Pizza, 785 Shugart Road, Suite 8

Comments: Scoop handles were observed in contact with food. Handles must be kept out of contact with food. They were removed from container. Corrected on site. A screwdriver was observed in the rinse compartment of the three-compartment sink. Wash and rinse sink to remove any contaminants that may have been on screwdriver. Corrected on site.

Comments: Dark spots observed in ice machine. Frequently clean and sanitize parts in contact with ice or surface that may affect ice integrity. This will help diminish mold. Washed tomatoes were placed back into carton box in which they were delivered. Tomatoes were moved to clean container and labeled to “re-wash.” Do not place washed fruits and vegetables in soiled containers to avoid contamination.

Comments: Top prep cooler was observed to contain build up, residue and food debris directly surrounding food containers, which were uncovered. Maintain food prep areas free of contaminants. A dead fly was observed on hot dog grill surface. Grill was taken apart and washed, rinsed and sanitized. A brown residue was observed at the bottom (inside) of ice bucket. The bucket was removed for proper cleaning. Maintain all food contact surface clean. Containers of onion, egg, breading mix were observed uncovered by three-compartment sink, in close enough distance to be reached by splash. Food was covered before dishwashing began. Food must be kept away from any possible contamination. Floors, walls, ceiling and equipment has visible build up. Surfaces must be kept clean to sight and touch.

Comments: Multiple bags containing chicken and a container in reach-in cooler/freezer were observed uncovered. Biscuits already made, were stored but left uncovered from the sides. These were found in the muddle of the kitchen in high traffic area. Cover foods to avoid contamination. Sanitizer buckets held a sanitizing concentration lower than is allowed. A container of clean utensils was observed near the floor, but 6 inches above floor that had water and debris inside. This water was kept in contact with previously washed utensils. Utensils were re-washed. Do not place clean food contact surfaces in area where there may be contamination. Keep clean items in another area. Corrected on site. Wet wiping cloths were found laying on counter tops. Place all wet cloths, not in use, in sanitizer bucket. Scoop handle was in contact with cheese in container in the walk in. Corrected on site. A wood panel, two buckets and ladder were observed in kitchen. Remove items.



Checkers, 883 Shugart Road

Chili’s Grill and Bar Restaurant, 881 Holiday Inn Drive

El Sombrero, 234 N. Hamilton St.

Comments: Cheese dip was observed in hot hold less than 135 degrees because it was not re-heated before placing in hot hold. Cheese was removed and re-heated to 135 degrees as it (cheese) was ready to eat, commercially processed food. RTE, commercially processed food must be re-heated to 135 degrees or more before placing in hot hold device. Food cooked on premises must be re-heated to more than 165 degrees and allowed to stand covered for two minutes when re-heating in microwave oven. Corrected on site. Sack of potatoes was observed sitting on floor of walk-in. All food must be stored at least 6 inches above floor. Last inspection form was not displayed for public view. Must be displayed within 15 feet of primary entrance, between 5 feet and 7 feet from the floor in an area where it can be read from 1 foot away.
