An 18-year-old from Dallas, Ga., was heading home Friday to celebrate an anniversary with his girlfriend when his tire blew out, resulting in a fatal crash on Interstate 75 South, Whitfield County Coroner Bobbie Dixon said.
Jarrett Lee Williams, a freshmen at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, swerved off the highway near exit 336 and hit a tree on the driver’s side of his car after the blow-out, Dixon said.
Georgia State Patrol reported him dead at the scene. A 911 dispatcher said the wreck was called in at 4:40 p.m. Friday.
“It’s devastating,” Dixon said. “He was so young. It hasn’t left my mind since it happened. He seemed like a good kid. It broke my heart.”
Williams, a graduate from East Paulding High School in Paulding County where he was involved in track and field, was driving a red Suzuki Sidekick that may have had some form of dry rot in the tire that blew out, Dixon said.
“It’s a miracle we didn’t have a big mess,” she said. “He crossed over two lanes of traffic. He was just going home this weekend to see his girlfriend.”
Williams was wearing his seat belt and no alcohol was involved, Georgia State Patrol officials said.
