The Daily Citizen is expanding its coverage of local high school and college sports “After Deadline.”
Daily Citizen sportswriters Devin Golden and Chris Whitfield have started a weekly podcast covering local high school and college sports teams in Whitfield and Murray counties. The podcast, “After Deadline,” is online at www.daltonnow.com.
The duo recorded the first episode Tuesday at WTTI 1530 AM in Rocky Face. With insight and analysis — along with some sarcasm and friendly banter — Golden and Whitfield focus heavily on area high school football. The first episode includes their thoughts on Friday’s matchups pitting Murray County against Model, Southeast Whitfield versus Ridgeland, Christian Heritage against Darlington and Dalton versus Northwest Whitfield.
“I’m very excited to bring our readers into the room for ‘After Deadline’ and the very fun conversations we have every day in the newsroom, most of the time conversations that take place after each night’s deadline when the sports staff is unwinding,” said William Bronson, The Daily Citizen’s publisher. “I believe our readers will enjoy the straight sports talk, but even more the rest of the conversation.”
Golden said podcasts are part of the industry’s expansion into online reporting mediums.
“Long gone are the days when newspaper reporters simply wrote a story for the print product and that was the extent of the sports coverage,” Golden said. “The Internet opened many fresh avenues for news outlets to tell stories, and podcasts are one of the multimedia-journalism tools increasing in popularity and making the best use of the digital age.
“Also, hats off to the people at WTTI for allowing us to use their facilities, equipment and computer programs. They were more than happy to grant our request, and without them this project would be very difficult to accomplish.”
The first episode is about 37 minutes, but future episodes will be approximately 20 minutes.
