Officials: Murder suspect used knife with 5-inch blade

The Whitfield County man accused of stabbing another man to death early Tuesday morning was known to regularly carry a knife, officials said.

Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Swiney said investigators learned from talking to people who knew Jonathan Colby Durden, 22, of 279 Quinn Drive in Rocky Face, that Durden carried a knife in a holster strapped to his side “just about all the time.”

Durden is charged with murdering Ricky C. Grice Jr., 28, of Walker County. Authorities say Grice drove to Durden’s rural home to pick up Alexa Blubaugh, 22, who had been living with Durden, after Blubaugh decided she wanted to leave. When Grice arrived, officials said, Durden didn’t want Grice to take Blubaugh away, so he stabbed Grice multiple times with a knife that had a 5-inch blade.

Durden was booked in the Whitfield County jail without bond. Blubaugh was also booked and charged with possession of meth and possession of tools for the commission of crime. She remained in jail with a $3,000 bond as of Wednesday evening.
