Man charged with attempted murder pleads not guilty

A Dalton man accused of attempted murder after authorities say he fired a handgun at his wife and stepson pleaded not guilty on Monday.

Stevie Lee Walkey, 45, of 2109 Millican Lane, was charged in February by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of aggravated assault with a gun and two counts of terroristic threats and acts. The aggravated assault charges were upgraded to criminal attempt to commit murder when the grand jury indicted Walkey on April 25.

Walkey’s attorney, Sam Sanders, declined to go into detail while the case is ongoing, but he said there is more to the story. Sanders said several of the alleged victims’ family members were in the courtroom Monday to support Walkey.

The attorneys are scheduled for calendar call before Judge David Blevins on July 8 to state whether they are prepared for trial on July 15.
