Still just one name out for Varnell council seat

No one qualified Wednesday to run for Seat 5 on the Varnell City Council, meaning Nancy Nelson remained the lone name going in to the final day of qualifying today.

Qualifying is from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.

City Clerk Pam Garrison said this is Nelson’s first time running for office in Varnell.

David Owens, who held Seat 5, resigned on Aug. 26 to run for mayor in the Nov. 5 election. Anthony Hulsey also qualified for mayor. Current Mayor Dan Peeples is not seeking re-election.

Because Owens resigned in the middle of a four-year term, whoever is elected to replace him will serve two years before another election in 2015, Garrison said.

Jan Pourquoi and Michael Willocks qualified last week for Seat 2 on the City Council. Both have not held office in Varnell before, Garrison said, adding that Seat 2 is currently held by Brent Newsome, who is not seeking re-election.

Ashlee Godfrey was the only person who qualified for Seat 1, which is currently held by James Caldwell. Caldwell is also not running again.
