Ex-gymnastics instructor arrested

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested a former gymnastics instructor Friday after an investigation revealed he had been sending inappropriate text messages and photographs to a former student, who is now 15.

William “Billy” Newcom, 38, of 81 Hope Drive, Rock Springs, was a gym instructor for the Creative Arts Guild approximately two years ago when some cheerleaders (now 13) from a local middle school attended training under the direction of Newcom.

One of the girls that attended started receiving the messages and photographs from him about one month ago. The messages from him included trying to get the 15-year-old to meet him for sex. The incident was brought to the attention of law enforcement after the girl’s mother found the messages on her daughter’s cellphone.

Newcom was charged with one felony count of computer or electronic pornography and child exploitation prevention. He is currently being held in the Whitfield County Jail. The investigation will continue. It is unknown if there are additional victims.
