Infant dies in ‘tragic accident’

A 2-month-old baby was killed after her mother accidentally pinned her and the child’s father against the wall of their home on Sunday, officials said.

Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Swiney said the father was carrying the baby in a carseat, and the mother was pulling their minivan around at their home off of Ga. Highway 41 South so the father wouldn’t have to step through some water to get inside.

“She moved it, and as the father and the baby walked in front of the vehicle, her foot slipped off the brake and onto the accelerator,” Swiney said.

The father is expected to be OK, but the child was taken to Hamilton Medical Center then to the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger where she was pronounced dead. Calling the event a “tragic accident,” Swiney said officials don’t expect to press charges.

Investigators will turn their findings over to the district attorney’s office when their review is complete, and the district attorney will make a final decision, he said.
