Searching for talent in Murray on Saturday

There are students in Murray County with amazing talents, which will be featured for the public on Saturday, organizers of Star Search 2014 say.

The second annual Star Search will be at 6 p.m. at Central Community Church on Highway 76 at Pine Hills Drive. It is hosted by the Murray Arts Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts in the county. Admission is $8 and assists the council in its efforts.

“It will be an entertaining show,” said Bruce West, one of the organizers. “You’ll be exposed to kids here in the area. You’ll be exposed to the Arts Council’s programs. It’s going to be a great show.”

There will be 30 acts featuring students from kindergarten to 12th grade, and each of the Murray County public schools will be represented, as well as Christian Heritage School in Dalton and homeschoolers, said Jennifer Jones, also one of the organizers.

“You will see everything,” she said.

Students will perform pieces ranging from those of Etta James and Janis Joplin to contemporary Christian music, and several will dance.

Last year’s winner, singer Jordan Hughes, and her band, The Red Giants, will be featured performers at the event.

“They are very good musicians,” West said. “She’s an anomaly.”

Hughes and The Red Giants perform blues rock, some contemporary songs and jazz.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the council. Last year the Star Search was hosted jointly by Go Murray Arts, a private business now in Eton, and the council.

The council, based in Chatsworth on Market Street, provides all ages with the opportunity to take private music classes, including piano, voice, woodwind and guitar, and will soon offer percussion. It provides gallery space to highlight local artists and offers weekly yoga classes.

Council members are looking to expand their offerings to include group music classes for young children and art classes.
