Injured coach could be taken off sedatives soon

— The Dalton State College assistant basketball coach injured in a wreck last week could be taken off sedatives today or Thursday, a college official said.

Dalton State Athletic Director Derek Waugh said John Redman has been in a drug-induced sleep to help him remain stable as his brain heals from swelling. Once he is off sedatives, Waugh said, the extent of his injuries will be easier to determine. Redman is at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He suffered head trauma and several broken bones.

The injuries are from a wreck in Meriwether County, about 40 miles south of Atlanta, in which investigators say Redman lost control of the Lexus he was driving and crashed into a concrete wall. The impact killed his fiancee, Brittany Huber, who was a teacher’s aide at City Park School. The two were traveling to Mobile, Ala., for their wedding, which was supposed to be on Saturday.

Supporters are working to raise money to help the families through the website www.caringbridge.org/visit/johnredman, where they are also posting updates on Redman’s condition.
