Armed robbery investigation continues

From Staff Reports

— Authorities are still investigating an incident in which a man reported being stabbed in a robbery in Rocky Face and had $3,117 stolen.

According to an incident report from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, Paul Durham was standing outside the Family Dollar at 2709 Chattanooga Road smoking a cigarette when a white male with long brown hair and a dark blue hooded sweatshirt came up and asked if he could have a cigarette, too. Durham told police he reached into his pocket, removing some cash in the process, and handed the man a cigarette.

When he did so, the man grabbed the cash and pulled an eight-inch knife on Durham when he tried to get it back, the report states. Durham told police he threw up his left arm to block a blow intended for his chest. The report states he had a four-inch laceration to his left forearm and had to have about 17 stitches after he went to Hamilton Medical Center.

“I can’t use (my arm),” Durham said Thursday. “My muscles are all messed up ... I can’t work.”

Durham said he does home repair and improvements for a living, and he was planning to use some of the cash to purchase wood and parts for a deck he’s now had to postpone finishing because of the injury.

Durham said the man eventually got into a small black passenger car, possibly a Honda or Nissan, with a Hispanic male driving and another man and the car took off. He said he doesn’t know any of the men.
