Officials: One dead after driver hits power line

A Dalton man is in jail after crashing a car into a power line early Sunday, killing one passenger and injuring another, Georgia State Patrol officials said.

Jesus Contreras-Mendez, 21, of 325 Goodwill Drive-18, was charged with felony first degree vehicular homicide, DUI and several other violations, including serious injury by vehicle, after he crashed a 2005 Honda Accord into a power line at the corner of Fleming Street and Holloway Drive at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, officials said.

Olympia Jimenez, also 21 and from Dalton, was thrown from the car, officials said, and died from the injuries.

Another passenger, whose name was not provided, was taken to Hamilton Medical Center to be treated for injuries, officials said, adding that no other vehicles were involved. Contreras-Mendez received minor injuries, officials said.

An officer with the Whitfield County jail, where Contreras-Mendez is being held, said Contreras-Mendez did not receive a bond at his first court appearance on Monday. He will next go before a judge in Superior Court, the officer said.

Contreras-Mendez’s other charges are reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane, running a red light, driving without a license and a seat belt violation.
