Rape trial could begin in May

Editor’s note: Updates on high-interest criminal cases previously reported in The Daily Citizen appear periodically on Saturdays.

The jury trial for a man accused of raping a Dalton woman almost a year ago is tentatively scheduled to begin in May.

Zachary Alan Henry was 27 when he was charged in December 2013 after the alleged victim told Dalton police Henry raped her and held her captive for several hours at a hotel in March 2013.

Henry is scheduled to appear in Whitfield County Superior Court April 22 before Judge David Blevins where both sides will state whether they are ready for trial May 5. Blevins set the dates at a court hearing on Monday.

• Ronald Len Merrill of Dalton is scheduled to appear before Judge Jack Partain on March 7 to state whether he is ready for trial on March 24. Merrill has been in court before, but his case was postponed as attorneys prepared for trial.

Merrill faces two counts of aggravated assault (family violence), false imprisonment, battery (family violence, first offense), three counts of obstruction and two counts of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer for allegedly threatening and choking a woman and pulling a steak knife on a Whitfield County sheriff’s deputy.

• Justin Wade Dunn, a Whitfield County man, charged with aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy, aggravated sexual battery and four counts of child molestation, is scheduled for a calendar call March 11 before Judge Cindy Morris to state whether he is ready for trial on March 14.
