Fire believed to have started outside home

Investigators are still working to learn what sparked a fire that nearly destroyed a house at 602 Top St. in Dalton on Monday.

Dalton Fire Department Deputy Chief Gary Baggett said Tuesday that investigators believe the fire started outside the structure at one of the doors to the house.

“What we don’t know at this point is what caused it,” he said.

Baggett said one of the people who lived there does “handyman work” and had some flammable materials in the area, but investigators don’t know that those items caused the blaze. He said the materials did contribute to the intensity of the fire.

The house was heavily involved in fire by the time neighbors called 911 to report smoke and what sounded like explosions shortly after 1 p.m. A family of four was living in the home, but no one was inside when the fire started, and there were no injuries, Baggett said.

He said investigators hope to know more within a few days.
