Whitfield County firefighter charged with arson

A Whitfield County firefighter was charged Friday with arson for allegedly setting fire to his own home earlier this year, officials said on Sunday.

Matthew Carl Gibson, 40, of 330 Concord Road, LaFayette, a full-time firefighter with the department, was accused of setting fire to his home at 692 Eber Road in Dalton, causing more than $130,000 in damage, on Feb. 16, according to a release from state Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.

Mike Babb, chairman of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners, said Gibson had been full time with the department for between six months and a year. He isn’t sure if Gibson had been a volunteer firefighter with the county prior to being hired full time.

Babb said the county will review Gibson’s employment this week and make a decision about leave.

“We will not have a fireman involved in arson,” he said.
