Coach continues recovery in Atlanta hospital

John Redman, the Dalton State College assistant basketball coach, is continuing to recover from wreck injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Dalton State Athletic Director Derek Waugh said he spoke with “Coach Red’s” parents this morning following a Monday evening wreck in Newnan that killed Redman’s fiancee Brittany Huber, a City Park School teacher assistant, and left Redman with several broken bones and a head injury.

“This is by far the most tragic thing that has happened to our young athletic department,” Waugh said.

Waugh said doctors performed a CAT scan on Redman today, and it showed his condition had not worsened. He said Redman is not in a coma but is in a kind of “drug-induced sleep” to help him recover from pressure on his brain.

Waugh said Redman’s family wants the community to know they appreciate the outpouring of support for both families. Huber, 25, and Redman, 23, had lived in the Dalton area only about a year after moving up from Mobile, Ala., so Redman could work in the college’s newly formed athletics department. They were to be married this weekend and had been engaged since 2013.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Redman was driving his 2008 Lexus on I-85 about 40 miles south of Atlanta when he lost control and drove onto the highway median, hitting a concrete bridge support. A specialized collision reconstruction team is preparing a report on exactly what happened.
