All public schools in Dalton, Whitfield and Murray county are closed Friday and emergency management workers planned to monitor the weather and have extra staff on standby to react to expected freezing rain and possible sleet early Friday.
Christian Heritage School is also closed Friday.
Freezing rain, possible sleet and icy roads were conceivable in Whitfield, Murray and several other North Georgia counties beginning early today, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Whitfield County Emergency Management Director Claude Craig said emergency responders planned to meet early and “be prepared to go out at 6 o’clock in the morning should the need arise.” Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s to around 30 in the morning but will warm up to about 40 by mid-afternoon. Saturday’s forecast is sunny and warmer with a high near 45.
Dalton State College opens at 10 a.m. Friday.
