Deputy-involved shooting under investigation

One taken to hospital

A man who apparently tried to commit suicide was taken to Hamilton Medical Center in unknown condition following a deputy-involved shooting late Monday night, Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood said.

Chitwood said it was unclear whether the officer shot the man who was attempting suicide, but authorities said the man had “numerous self-inflicted wounds.” He is believed to live at the residence on Old Chattanooga Road in Rocky Face near Beavers Road where deputies responded.

“A call came in about 8:40. The subject appeared to be attempting suicide,” Chitwood said. “A short time after (officers) arrived on the scene, a shot was fired. An officer discharged his duty weapon.”

Chitwood said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in, which is standard in an officer-involved shooting.

He said it hasn’t been determined whether the man, who was not identified, fired at the officers.
