Small quake hits Varnell

A magnitude 2.5 earthquake with an epicenter about four miles north of Varnell struck this morning shortly after 4.

An earthquake of this magnitude can be felt by some people but doesn’t usually cause damage to buildings.

According to United States Geological Survey information, the largest earthquake in the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone, which includes Whitfield County, was a magnitude 4.6 quake that occurred near Fort Payne, Ala., in 2003.
