NGEMC crews working to restore power

Primary areas affected are in Walker and Chattooga counties

As of 9:30 p.m., approximately 3,500 North Georgia EMC customers are without power due to this evening’s thunderstorms and strong winds. While outages are scattered across NGEMC’s seven-county service territory, extensive damage has occurred in areas of Walker and Chattooga counties. Crews are working to clear many fallen trees and to repair numerous broken poles and downed power lines in these areas. Please stay away from downed lines and report them immediately to NGEMC, your local power company or call 911. Crews will remain on duty until all power has been restored.

NGEMC members may report outages through the NGEMC Mobile App, the NGEMC Mobile Web App, or by calling NGEMC and using the automated telephone outage reporting system. During widespread outages, customers may experience longer than normal wait times due to extremely high call volume.

For updated power outage information, please visit NGEMC’s website at www.ngemc.com or North Georgia EMC’s Facebook page.

  • Civil War anniversary: The Battle of Crow Valley, May 9-12, 1864

The Atlanta Campaign began during the first two weeks of May 1864 in and around Dalton. Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s strategy was to target two of his armies, about 80,000 men, against Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston’s Army of Tennessee at Dalton. Then, while Johnston’s attention was diverted by these forces, he would secretly send his third army, about 25,000 troops under Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson, in a flanking movement to the southwest through Snake Creek Gap. Sherman’s goal was to break Johnston’s railroad supply line some 15 miles south at Resaca and trap Johnston’s Confederates in Dalton.
