‘Shirtless bandit’ arrested

A man suspected of burglarizing a vehicle parked at IHOP in Dalton about two weeks ago was charged on Wednesday with several offenses.

Odie Dwain Ellis, 32, of 700 Liberty Drive, Dalton, was charged by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with entering an automobile with intent to commit theft or felony, two counts of financial transaction card theft and identification fraud.

The suspect was dubbed the “shirtless bandit” after a surveillance video image showed him — without a shirt — using a credit card stolen in the incident to make a $100-plus purchase at a Shell service station on Chattanooga Road.

Police had asked for the public’s help in locating the man, saying he was suspected of taking three Blackberry cellphones, a Samsung Galaxy tablet computer, a laptop computer, a wedding band, a .38 special Smith and Wesson gun and about $3,000 in cash.
