Park named for Varnell council member Fidler

The Highland Forest Landowners Association has dedicated the subdivision’s track, lake and tennis courts to Varnell City Council member Mark Fidler.

Fidler, who recently underwent a second surgery for brain cancer, cut the ribbon on the newly named Fidler Park on Monday.

Varnell Mayor Dan Peeples said people from across the Varnell community came out to support Fidler.

“Everyone has always held Mr. Fidler in high regard,” Peeples said. “He helped collect donations so they could have a community swimming pool. He helped on the project that built the tennis courts. He developed the concrete walking path around the lake.”

In addition to his service to the landowners association and his current service on the City Council, Fidler served 14 years on the Whitfield County Board of Education, including eight years as chairman, in the 1980s and 1990s.

“He has always done a lot for the community,” Peeples said.
