Murray County sole commissioner Jim Welch on Tuesday approved the issue of $4.5 million in bonds backed by the proceeds of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters last year.
“Our voters approved several different major projects — the jail expansion, the rec expansion, the library expansion and the senior center expansion. All those projects are happening this year,” Welch said.
The five-year SPLOST is expected to raise a little over $30 million. The interest on the bonds that will be issued is 2.79 percent.
Welch also approved several other SPLOST-related items, including:
• A $239,000 contract with Georgia Power to install lights at eight ball fields at the Hyden Tyler recreation complex.
• A $233,500 contract with Homer Construction for a 2,220-square-foot expansion of the library.
Welch also approved the $19,688 purchase of a Ford F-150 truck for the building inspector and the $19,688 purchase of a Ford Crown Victoria for the sheriff’s office form Prater Ford. Welch said Prater Ford was the low bidder for both vehicles. Both vehicles will be bought with money from the 2002 SPLOST.
