UPDATE: Detective released from hospital

From Staff Reports

A Whitfield County detective was injured late Tuesday night while helping to serve a search warrant on Levi Circle in Murray County, officials said. Detective Dewayne Holmes was released from Hamilton Medical Center early this morning and was resting at home, said Maj. John Gibson with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

“He had no broken bones, but he did sustain severe trauma bruising to his upper torso and lower extremities, and he had some damage to his teeth,” Gibson said. “He may lose some of his teeth. He will have follow-up exams with a physician of his choice to check for internal injuries, but the fact that he got to go home is a good sign in regard to that.”

Murray County and Whitfield County detectives were executing a search warrant at the Levi Circle address when a vehicle pulled up and the Whitfield detective went over to speak with the driver of the vehicle, a spokesman for the Murray County Sheriff’s Office said.

“The passenger side door was open and he went to that side, he was in between the door and the seat, and the driver put the vehicle in reverse,” said Lisa Sanford, administrative secretary for the Murray County Sheriff's Office. “The detective was kind of scooped up so he had to hold on.”

Gibson said he was unsure exactly how far Holmes was dragged but said it could have been “between 30 and 100 yards.”

Agent Jerry Scott with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said GBI officials want to talk to Clifford Devin King, approximately 40, who is the registered owner of the vehicle. Scott did not have a description of the vehicle but said King’s last known address was in the Talking Rock area.
