Prep roundup: It starts with a ‘W’ for Lady Bruins at Southeast Whitfield Hoopfest

• Dalton opened its season by winning two of three duals in a four-team event at Tennessee’s East Hamilton High.

The Catamounts won 60-12 against both Sale Creek (Tenn.) and Chattanooga’s Silverdale Baptist but lost 53-25 to East Hamilton.

Noah Burns (152) won all three of his 152-pound matches via pin, while Dylan Carlile (126) and 2011-12 Class 4A 182-pound state champion Sidney Wheeler (220) also went 3-0 and Jose Garcia (138) finished 2-0 with a pair of pins.

Guztavo Diaz (170) pinned against Sale Creek and Eddie Santillion (138) pinned against Silverdale.

“We’ve got a lot to work on but I’m proud of the guys,” said Michael Keefe, who is in his first year as head coach at Dalton. “They fought pretty hard. I think we saw that the biggest reason why we lost was inexperience.”

Murray County 60, Coosa 15: The Indians opened their season with a rout of the visiting Eagles behind pins from Jacob Ramos (126), Christian Torres (145), Kevin Chavez (182), Clay Thornbury (195), Willy Amador (220) and Allen Roberts (285).

Domingo Bautista (113), Tielor Johnson (132), Chavita Perez (160) and Willy Hernandez (170) all accepted forfeits for Murray County.

In JV competition against Morris Innovative, Johnson, Fernando Figueroa (182) and Zach Ellis (195) won by pin for Murray County, while Ramos won by technical fall. Morris got pin victories from Jason Marquez (220) and Nicholas Greene (285).

The Tigers also competed against Coosa, but those results were not reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

• Northwest’s duals with Rockmart and host Gordon Lee were canceled due to Rockmart being in the Class 3A football state playoffs.
