Chatsworth man convicted of aggravated assault with van

Ricky Eugene Patterson, 56, of 130 Patterson St., Chatsworth, was found guilty on Thursday by a Whitfield County jury of aggravated assault for using his van to strike Nathanial Silvers, pinning him to the side of a mobile home.

Patterson, who was represented by the public defender’s office, faces up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced today by Superior Court Judge Cindy Morris, who presided over the trial.

The evidence presented at trial by Assistant District Attorney Ben Kenemer concerned an incident which occurred on Nov. 1, 2011, at 148 Burlington Way in Dalton. Patterson and the victim’s mother were living together and had just recently moved into the residence. An argument began between them concerning work that needed to be done to the mobile home. At some point, Patterson stated he was leaving, but after getting in his van, drove straight at and into Silvers, trapping him between the vehicle and the home. Patterson then left before law enforcement could respond and was later arrested at the Dalton Parole Office.

Silvers suffered from internal bleeding and was hospitalized for three days but made a full recovery. The case was investigated by Deputy Shannon Manis with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Patterson had previously been convicted in 2002 of voluntary manslaughter for the shooting death of Bobby Shane Morgan in Murray County. Patterson was on active parole for that offense when arrested in 2011.
