Prep roundup: Southeast boys, girls rout Murray County

Southeast Whitfield High School’s boys soccer team responded to Friday’s disappointing loss to rival Dalton with a 4-0 win Tuesday at Murray County.

Erik Salaises’ goal was the only score in the first half, but Byron Miranda scored three goals for the Raiders (2-1) in the final 40 minutes. Southeast’s Christian Saenz and Rodalfo Flores each had assists.

The Raiders’ usual goalkeeper, Abel Mendiola, left the game early and was replaced by Remy Miranda.

“He got run into again and tweaked that knee that had been bothering him,” South-east coach Kevin Kettenring said. “So we thought it was best for him to sit down.”

Southeast lost 3-1 at home to Dalton in Sub-region 7B-4A play last week. Tuesday’s win didn’t count in the league standings — Murray County competes in Region 7-2A — but was a step in the right direction for a team that is behind others in the area when it comes to hours on the field of competition this season.

The Indians dropped to 4-2-1.

Southeast girls 9, Murray County 0: Alejandra Lerma’s four-goal performance highlighted the Lady Raiders’ rout of their border rivals in Chatsworth.

Samantha Gravitt and Diana Paramo each added two goals for Southeast (2-1) — one of Paramo’s scores came on a penalty kick — while Anahay Rangel curved a corner kick into the net for the Lady Raiders’ other goal. Patty Pacheco had an assist on one of Gravitt’s scores.

Maria Canales made three saves while working the first half in goal for Southeast.

Sydney Covington took over in the second half to finish the shutout. Murray County dropped to 4-3 with the loss.

North Murray 5, Adairsville 0: Ismael Cruz scored twice, while Freddy Urbina, Antonio Maldonado and Alexis Solorzano each added a goal for the Mountaineers (4-1, 4-0 Region 5-3A) in the road win.

Maldonado and Urbina each had an assist, while Manuel Gonzalez made six saves to earn the shutout in goal.

Cartersville boys 2, Coahulla Creek 1: A penalty kick conversion in the second half doomed the Colts (3-3, 3-2 Region 5-3A).

Jo-An Barcenas scored Coahulla Creek’s lone goal on a free kick in the 16th minute. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime and the Purple Hurricanes got a penalty kick just six minutes into the second half, Colts coach Eric Parker said.

Missa Fraire made 19 saves in goal for Coahulla Creek, which had 23 shots on goal.

Christian Heritage boys 2, Excel Christian 2 (4-3): The Lions improved to 1-2 overall and in Sub-region 6A-A play with the shootout victory at home.

The game was tied 2-2 at halftime after the Lions’ Christian Joseph and Hunter Dixon each had goals, and neither side scored in the second half or overtime.

In penalty kicks, Ben Crawford, Cameron Hawkins and Phillip Jackson made their attempts, while Joseph made the game-winner. Goalkeeper Andrew McEntyre made six saves in regulation and two during the shootout.

n Cartersville girls 4, Coahulla Creek 0: Regina Pacheco had four shots on goal while Melissa Cabrera made 21 saves for the Lady Colts (0-6, 0-5 Region 5-3A) in the loss.

Adairsville girls 7, North Murray 0: The Lady Mountaineers (0-4, 0-4 Region 5-3A) were outshot 32-8 in the road loss, with North Murray goalkeeper Amber Bandy recording 25 saves.

• Christian Heritage did not report results from its scheduled girls match against Trion by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.
