Chatsworth parade to don Hollywood theme

CHATSWORTH — Where can you see “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph,” “The Polar Express” and “It’s a Wonderful Life?”

They’re not just on television this year. They’re also floats in this year’s Christmas parade in Chatsworth.

This year’s theme for the 24th Annual North Georgia Mountain Christmas Parade is “Christmas on the Silver Screen.” The parade will roll through downtown on Saturday at 6 p.m.

“I think we’ll see a wonderful, magical parade because of the theme,” said Diane Arnold, office manager of the Chatsworth-Eton-Murray County Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the parade. “A lot of people are very excited about that. We have had a lot of positive feedback.”

There were close to 50 entries as of Tuesday. The deadline to enter as a participant is Thursday. The cost is $30 for the first entry and $5 for each additional one. Last year’s parade had 57 entries.

Awards are given for most outstanding float, best of theme, most musical, best of lights, best religious entry, best walking group, best spirit, president’s choice and most creative. The same float can win in multiple categories.

Murray County High School’s band will lead the parade, and North Murray High School’s band will also march. This year’s grand marshal is U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pannell, a native of Eton.

Many churches participate in the parade annually.

“Don’t forget the reason for the season, Jesus,” Arnold said. “That’s the number one thing. ... We’re so thankful to all our participants this year. Our parade is always very special. It has always been a great parade.”

Lineup for the floats will be at the Murray County Saddle Club and the parade will go north on Second Avenue. Walkers join at Oak Street. The parade goes south on Third Avenue (Highway 411) through town from there.
