Janet “Jan” Ruth Hiland, 70, passed away peacefully at home on Amelia Island on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.
She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Aug. 28, 1943, to the late Kelsay and Ruth McWhorter. She moved to Maitland, Fla., in 1954 where she graduated from Edgewater High School and attended the University of Florida. She married the love of her life, Jon Hiland, on Nov. 28, 1943, and raised their family in Winter Park. She spent the past 20 years in Amelia Island.
Jan was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend who lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed traveling around the world, studying the Bible and history, playing bridge and spending time with dear friends and family, and she was an inspiration to all who spent time with her.
Jan is survived by her husband Jon of 49 years; two children, Jon Hiland II of Dalton and Alicia (Bill) Walker of Gainesville, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Ethan, Chandler, Jacob and Thomas.
A memorial service will take place Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Church with a reception immediately following at the Golf Club of Amelia Island.
